The Anglo-Azerbaijani Society
Our overarching aim is to build links between the UK and Azerbaijan, and to strengthen the friendships between the peoples of our countries. As our constitution says: “To foster Anglo-Azerbaijani relationships in all respects”
In its early days, the main thrust of the Society’s early activities was providing humanitarian aid. However, with the improved fortunes of the Azerbaijan economy through oil and gas wealth, the Azerbaijan Government is now well placed financially to meet its own needs. Therefore the present objective of the Society, while being non-political, is to further relations between the two countries:
- Through developing cultural understanding
- Through mutual development of the skills and talents of our peoples
- Through building a relationship with businesses so that they can better appreciate the cultures and history of the UK and Azerbaijan
- Through charitable work on a case by case basis should the need arise.
We were the first friendship society to be formed following the Soviet break-up and form a significant thread in the UK and Azerbaijan relationship. BP was the first founder member and then other corporations came along to support us over the years. But we can carry on only with the continued support of the sponsors and members.
Because we adhere to the principle that funds raised for our charities and other activities are used only for that purpose, we depend on our contributors for all the other costs of the Society including administration.
Who are we?
The membership comprises corporate companies such as BP, Amec, KCA Deutag, ITE Exhibitions, CB&I, and Rapid Solutions along with many smaller firms, as well as individuals who have worked in or have an interest in Azerbaijan.
An Executive Committee of 15 officers runs the Society and until last year was chaired from 2000 by Lord Fraser of Carmyllie QC, who sadly passed away in 2013. His predecessor and our first Chairman was The Rt. Hon. Tim Eggar, former UK Energy Minister. Lord German took on the role of Co-Chairman (London) earlier this year. We are also honoured to have Professor Nargiz Pasheyeva as Co-Chairman of the Society in Baku.
The Society also has an Advisory Committee whose advice is sought on policy matters.
Co-Patrons are The Rt. Hon. Lord Hurd of Westwell and H.E. Mr. Tahir Taghizade, Azerbaijan Ambassador in London.
Why should you join?
Azerbaijan is a fascinating country of great strategic and commercial importance. With large oil and gas reserves, a highly sophisticated and cultured people and significant agricultural and tourism potential, it holds one of the main keys to the prosperity of the Caspian region. The country has been dealt a difficult set of geographical and political cards including a territorial dispute involving hundreds of thousands of displaced people. However, 2005 brought the Baku-Tbilisi-Jeyhan oil pipeline on stream which has transformed the finances of Azerbaijan together with major gas reserves now coming to fruition.
Anyone interested in closer involvement with this country should join the Society. You will learn a lot, meet fascinating people, and through the activities of the Society make a big difference especially to young people some of whom are disadvantaged.
