Mike German was born in Cardiff and now lives in Llanfrechfa in the east of Wales.  He started his working life as a teacher, and taught music in various high schools in Cardiff.  In 1991 he became the director of the European Unit at the Welsh Joint Education Committee.

He led the Council group on Cardiff City Council for 13 years.

In 1997 he was awarded the OBE for political and community service in Wales.

In 1999 he was elected to represent South Wales East in the first ever elections for the National Assembly for Wales.  A year earlier he had been elected by the Party to be their leader in waiting for the National Assembly.  In 2000 he took the party into a coalition government holding the post of Deputy First Minister, and for various periods ministerial portfolios for the Economy, Europe, and Rural Affairs.   He led the Party in the National Assembly until December 2008, latterly chairing its Environment and Sustainability Committee.   In 2007 he became the overall leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats – a post which until then had been designated for an MP at Westminster.

In June 2010 he left the National Assembly to join the House of Lords.   He currently chairs the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee on Work and Pensions and leads on these matters for the party in the House of Lords.

In Parliament Mike has also been able to continue his early life passion for music.  He is a member of the prestigious Parliament Choir and is a current Trustee and former Chair.

His parliamentary activities include roles in all party groups as diverse as Oman, Classical Music, and Azerbaijan.   He is a Member of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly.

His roles outside Parliament include the Honorary Presidencies of Dolen Cymru – The Wales Lesotho Link, and the Monmouth Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust.  He is proud to have been recently appointed as Chairman of the Anglo Azerbaijan Society.

Graduated from the Baku State University in Philology in 1983 and attained her Postgraduate in 1986.  She then went on to take a PhD in Philological Sciences and finally her Doctorate. Professor Pashayeva has worked at Baku State University in the posts of Assistant, lecturer, Senior lecturer, Associate professor, department of the history of literature of Azerbaijan, in the faculty of Philology.

In 2008 Professor Pashayeva received an honorary award – “For Contribution to Friendship” by the Russian Center of International scientific and cultural cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.  In 2009    was awarded the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan was awarded with title of “Honoured Scientist of Azerbaijan” for the contribution to the development of science in Azerbaijan. In  2011 was awarded the “Order of Friendship” for contribution to the development of cultural relations between Russia and Azerbaijan, as well as for promotion of Russian culture abroad. The award was presented by the President of Russian Federation.  Professor Pashayeva is also a Member of Board, Charity Foundation “Friends of the Culture of Azerbaijan”.

Was born to a refugee Azeri family in the eastern Turkish city of Kars. His parents fled during the 1913-1918 Azeri-Armenian conflict from the territory of Azerbaijan known at that time as Iravan Khanate, an area which became occupied by Armenian Forces and is now located within the borders of the Armenian Republic.

After graduating from Istanbul University Medical School in 1970, continued his medical training in the UK, gaining the Surgical Fellowship degree from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1978.

He also worked with The Turkish community in London and ran his own private medical clinic from 1980 until finally retiring from medical practice in 2004.

After retirement he has been working as a volunteer with Azeri and Turkish Diaspora Organizations in UK.And since 2007 he has been involved full-time in the design and development of The Azerbaijan House Cultural and Friendship Centre in London, serving as its chairman.

During Howards ten year tenure serving on the committee of the Society he has been at the forefront providing sponsorship for students, local musicians and providing special auditory books for deaf children in Baku. More recently Howard has been an active member and change agent providing consistent input into the redevelopment of the Societies future both within the UK and Azerbaijan.

In addition, Howard demonstrates continuous contribution to the British Business Group and to the United Aid for Azerbaijan (UAFA).

Ms Gunel was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan. She was a winner of country-wide Olympiad in Azerbaijani Language and Literature at the age of 16 and have received multiple Certificates of Honours for her academic achievements.She graduated from Azerbaijan Medical University with First Class Honours degree before embarking on a research career at the Biochemistry Department, Azerbaijan Medical University. Following her passion in Genetics, she moved to the UK to complete her PhD degree at the University of Cambridge, focusing on inherited brain disease research.

Gunel is an author of multiple publications in Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages. She currently works in healthcare business intelligence sector, advising large healthcare business across the world on their business strategy.

Gunel is passionate about helping other people. Her charity and volunteering activities have included helping the Cambridge Azerbaijan Society in its mission to integrate Azeri students into University life, organising the Cambridge University Science Festival and volunteering with her current employer supporting the literacy and child cancer charities.

As a Humanitarian and Charity Director at The Anglo-Azerbaijani Society, Gunel’s mission is to further the building of bridges between two cultures, to help the society to expand its excellent charity and outreach activities and to attract more young talent to the society in order to ensure future generations continue the great work.

Outside work, Gunel also enjoys learning about history of art and does painting and yoga in her free time.

For Schlumberger he worked ofshore and onshore at the rig site as a feld engineer, a role that provided technical understanding of drilling and completon actvites. While working for Accenture as a Strategy Management Consultant, he partcipated in the defniton and delivery of several large scale programmes for BP. Over the last 6 years he has worked for KCA Deutag, an internatonal engineering and drilling contractor. In additon to currently leading KCA Deutag’s Global Business Development Team, he played a driving role in enhancing the company's compettve positon to secure several large contracts jointly valued at more than $3bn. Rodrigo’s current focus is to spearhead KCA Deutag’s effort to entry new markets and to lead the negotatons to establish two Joint Ventures with Natonal Oil Companies. Recently he has worked closely with governments and state agencies including national oil companies SOCAR in Azerbaijan and KazMunaiGaz in Kazakhstan.
David’s current role is director of Eurasian Energy Ventures Limited. David spent over 20 years with Conoco in a number of technical and managerial positions in oil and gas exploration and field development, working in Libya, the UK, Chad, the US, Indonesia and Russia. This was followed by 10 years in Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan, as the General Manager for BG Kazakhstan. More recently, he held the VP Marketing and Strategy for the CIS with EADS (now Airbus) in Paris, spent a number of years as DEA’s general manager in Baku, Azerbaijan followed by the company’s Advisor for Central Asia based in Kazakhstan. He also acted as a Non-Executive Director of Petro Matad, a Mongolia-based AIM-listed oil and gas explorer.

He is a member of Chatham House, a Certified Petroleum Geologist with the AAPG and  a member of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain.

His is also a board member of the British – Kazakh Society.


Reshad Vahabzada
Mr Rashad Vahabzade was born in Baku in 1972. After graduating from Baku State University in 1993 he joined governmental service at the Administration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan as Assistant to the State Counsellor for International Affairs.

He continued his diplomatic career as cultural attaché at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ankara, Turkey in 1995. After serving five years in Turkey, he continued his service at the Foreign Ministry as the 2nd secretary in 2001 and was consistently promoted as 1st secretary and then Head of the First European Department (UK and Northern Europe) at the Directorate for Europe and USA.
He was then appointed political Counsellor to the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ankara in 2006, being in charge for bilateral political issues and Embassies concurrently accredited to Azerbaijan. He was appointed Charge d’Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Turkey in 2009 and 2010.  
He continued his service at the Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry in 2010 - 2015 as Deputy Director for Europe.
