The Society is run by an executive committee which consists of members
from our sponsor companies as well as people who have experience in Azerbaijan.

Professor Nergiz Pashayeva (Co-Chairman Baku)
Graduated from the Baku State University in Philology in 1983 and attained her Postgraduate in 1986.  She then went on to take a PhD in Philological Sciences and finally her Doctorate. Professor Pashayeva has worked at Baku State University in the posts of Assistant, lecturer, Senior lecturer, Associate professor, department of the history of literature of Azerbaijan, in the faculty of Philology.

1994-2008 – Head of Language and Literature Department, Baku Musical Academy

2005- Professor, Department of the Classical Azerbaijani Literature, Baku State University

Since 2006 –  Art director, “UNS” Private Theatre

2006-2008 – Vice-Rector for international relations, Baku State University

Since 2006 – Chairman, Council for PhD dissertations on journalism and philological studies, Baku State University.

Since 2007- Member of Writers’ Union of Azerbaijan.

Since 2008 – Head of Department of the Classical Azerbaijani Literature, Baku State University

Since 2008 –    Rector, Baku branch of the Lomonosov Moscow State University

In 2008 Professor Pashayeva received an honorary award – “For Contribution to Friendship” by the Russian Center of International scientific and cultural cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.  In 2009    was awarded the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan was awarded with title of “Honoured Scientist of Azerbaijan” for the contribution to the development of science in Azerbaijan. In  2011 was awarded the “Order of Friendship” for contribution to the development of cultural relations between Russia and Azerbaijan, as well as for promotion of Russian culture abroad. The award was presented by the President of Russian Federation.  Professor Pashayeva is also a Member of Board, Charity Foundation “Friends of the Culture of Azerbaijan”.

Lord German OBE – Co-Chairman, London
Mike German was born in Cardiff and now lives in Llanfrechfa in the east of Wales.  He started his working life as a teacher, and taught music in various high schools in Cardiff.  In 1991 he became the director of the European Unit at the Welsh Joint Education Committee.

He led the Council group on Cardiff City Council for 13 years.

In 1997 he was awarded the OBE for political and community service in Wales.

In 1999 he was elected to represent South Wales East in the first ever elections for the National Assembly for Wales.  A year earlier he had been elected by the Party to be their leader in waiting for the National Assembly.  In 2000 he took the party into a coalition government holding the post of Deputy First Minister, and for various periods ministerial portfolios for the Economy, Europe, and Rural Affairs.   He led the Party in the National Assembly until December 2008, latterly chairing its Environment and Sustainability Committee.   In 2007 he became the overall leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats – a post which until then had been designated for an MP at Westminster.

In June 2010 he left the National Assembly to join the House of Lords.   He currently chairs the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee on Work and Pensions and leads on these matters for the party in the House of Lords.

In Parliament Mike has also been able to continue his early life passion for music.  He is a member of the prestigious Parliament Choir and is a current Trustee and former Chair.

His parliamentary activities include roles in all party groups as diverse as Oman, Classical Music, and Azerbaijan.   He is a Member of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly.

His roles outside Parliament include the Honorary Presidencies of Dolen Cymru – The Wales Lesotho Link, and the Monmouth Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust.  He is proud to have been recently appointed as Chairman of the Anglo Azerbaijan Society.

Mike is married to Veronica.

Dr. Ali Tekin Atalar MD, FRCS,
was born to a refugee Azeri family in the eastern Turkish city of Kars. His parents fled during the 1913-1918 Azeri-Armenian conflict from the territory of Azerbaijan known at that time as Iravan Khanate, an area which became occupied by Armenian Forces and is now located within the borders of the Armenian Republic.

After graduating from Istanbul University Medical School in 1970, continued his medical training in the UK, gaining the Surgical Fellowship degree from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1978.

He also worked with The Turkish community in London and ran his own private medical clinic from 1980 until finally retiring from medical practice in 2004.

After retirement he has been working as a volunteer with Azeri and Turkish Diaspora Organizations in UK.And since 2007 he has been involved full-time in the design and development of The Azerbaijan House Cultural and Friendship Centre in London, serving as its chairman.

Nicholas Baxter
is the CEO and a director of Eurasia Energy Limited. He has a 24 year career in international resource exploration and development. Originally trained as a geophysicist, Mr Baxter has worked on geophysical survey and exploration projects in the U.K., Central Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Read More...

Mr Baxter was a director and COO of A&B Geoscience Corporation from 1992 to 2002 and under his guidance the company secured the first onshore production sharing agreement in Azerbaijan in 1998.

Malcolm Day
has a wealth of experience in the airline industry and brought his experience to good effect when he was Area Sales Manager – Central Asia with British Mediterranean Airways. During this time he was instrumental in working closely with many corporations to help them maximise their travel budgets at a time of rapid expansion in Azerbaijan, mainly relating to the exploration of oil and gas.

Malcolm has enjoyed working in Azerbaijan immensely and was always made most welcome by its people.

Howard Lyn
has been an active member of Baku business community for over 16 years.  He is the founder and the head of Rapid Solutions Group, multi services support company to Oil and Gas Industry in Azerbaijan that employs 300 people of which approximately 95% are Azerbaijani.

Howard is a committee member of British Business Group & also a member of the board of Anglo-Azerbaijani Society.

Shahrivar Mahmoud-Zadeh
started his business activities in Azerbaijan in 1994 as a regional director for the Heath Group, promoting their insurance and reinsurance activities in the Caspian region. Thereafter, he successfully established Caspian International and Insurance Broking in 1995, and has since assisted local founders of Azeri insurance companies to establish their own businesses.

Currently, he is a Partner with JLT, who are an international group of Risk Specialists and Employee Benefits Consultants and one of the largest companies of its type in the world.  Fluent in Azeri, he has interests in an Azeri leasing company and is also Chairman of the Caspian Investment and Development Corporation (“CIDC”) who are currently implementing a major paper and tissue project in Baku.

Neil Munro
has a wealth of experience in business development, sales and marketing and worked for over 20 years for the Hydrasun Group and Rigblast based in Azerbaijan.

Responsible for the conceptual studies, organisation planning, establishment and promotion and operation of the Caspian Region.

Zaur Jabrail
I joined BP in 1997. Now managing an extensive portfolio of company corporate events, brand campaigns, sustainable development initiatives and sponsorship programs within Azerbaijan.

Darryl Pawsey
is the Regional Industry Director at ITE Group Plc.

Managing the companies Building and Interiors portfolio of exhibitions which are spread thought out 12 countries, including Azerbaijan’s internationally recognised exhibition BakuBuild.

With over 15 years’ experience in the exhibition industry, he has a wealth of experience in international sales and marketing.

Rodrigo Rendon
has 20 years internatonal experience within the oil and gas industry.

For Schlumberger he worked ofshore and onshore at the rig site as a feld engineer, a role that provided technical understanding of drilling and completon actvites. While working for Accenture as a Strategy Management Consultant, he partcipated in the defniton and delivery of several large scale programmes for BP. Over the last 6 years he has worked for KCA Deutag, an internatonal engineering and drilling contractor. In additon to currently leading KCA Deutag’s Global Business Development Team, he played a driving role in enhancing the company's compettve positon to secure several large contracts jointly valued at more than $3bn. Rodrigo’s current focus is to spearhead KCA Deutag’s effort to entry new markets and to lead the negotatons to establish two Joint Ventures with Natonal Oil Companies. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from ITESM Campus Monterrey and a masters degree in Internatonal Economics and Management (MBA) from Bocconi University in Milan.

David Skeels
has an extensive background in international business development and relationship management, with a focus on the Caucasus and Central Asia and the upstream oil and gas industry. Recently he has worked closely with governments and state agencies including national oil companies SOCAR in Azerbaijan and KazMunaiGaz in Kazakhstan.

David’s current roles include director of Eurasian Energy Ventures Limited, advisor to DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG, expert advisor to the Frontier Strategy Group and consultant to a leading international political and risk analysis organization.

David spent over 20 years with Conoco in a number of technical and managerial positions in oil and gas exploration and field development, working in Libya, the UK, Chad, the US, Indonesia and Russia. This was followed by 10 years in Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan, as the General Manager for BG Kazakhstan. More recently, he held the VP Marketing and Strategy for the CIS role with EADS (now Airbus), spent five years as DEA’s general manager in Baku, Azerbaijan and two based in Kazakhstan as their Advisor for Central Asia. He also acted as a Non-Executive Director of Petro Matad, a Mongolia-based AIM-listed oil and gas explorer.

He is a member of Chatham House, the Anglo-Azerbaijani Society, an AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist, a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain and the South-East Asia Petroleum Exploration Society.

David Skeels was the founding Chairman of the Kazakhstan Petroleum Association and founding Chairman of the Kazakhstan Foreign Investors Council Association, ultimately being recognized by President Nazarbaev for his services to the oil and gas industry in Kazakhstan.

He is now based in Newbury, England.

Margaret Morris
Executive  Secretary, has worked for the Society since its formation in 1997.

Over the years of working for the Society, she has built up an extensive contacts base and deals with all administration relating to the Society.  Margaret previously worked for BP for over 15 years.
